Last week Asia Society hosted an exclusive meet and greet with Japanese superstar Ryoko Yonekura. The popular actress has returned to Broadway to revive the iconic role of Roxie Hart in the legendary hit musical Chicago. Performances kicked off this past weekend on July 3rd and will run through July 13th, 2017 only.
Yonekura originated the role in the Japanese- language production in 2008, then made her Broadway debut in 2012 where she performed the part in English.
When asked to describe how playing Roxie Hart today, differed from playing her years ago, the actress admitted she was less worried about her pronunciation and was having more fun with the character.
"This time, I'm much more confident and I look forward to expressing more of my personality... I could very easily get overwhelmed thinking about the great actresses that have come before me in this role, and how they compare to my take on Roxie Hart. But, I'm not giving into that kind of pressure. More than anything, I just feel very thankful. It's a pleasure to do this role again on Broadway"- Ryoko Yonekura.
Set in the glamorous 1920's, the story follows Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who murders her on-the-side lover after he threatens to walk out on her. Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes the public, the media and her rival cellmate, Velma Kelly, by hiring Chicago's slickest criminal lawyer to transform her malicious crime into a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which might just as easily be ripped from today's tabloids.
The music, the sets, the acting, Chicago is the total package. A six
time Tony Award winner, and officially the #1 longest running American
musical in Broadway history, Chicago is one the show you'd be crazy not to see.
