Versace Runway Hair by Guido for Redken

Milan Fashion Week Spring/ Summer 2013

Hair by Guido, Redken Creative Consultant
Redken Creative Consultant Guido styled the hair at the Versace Spring 2013 show in a natural, easy, un-done way unlike what he typically creates for Versace. But after seeing the collection it all made sense: Dontatella Versace's light, loose looks were a total departure from her last dark, borderline gothic collection. The models today almost looked as if they were ready to hit the beach - and not without breezy summer hair to match!

"I'd describe the look today at Versace as effortless, very dusty - think of the desert and the beach. It's not one of the usual "done-up" styles I've created for Donatella in the past few seasons, as she really wanted a natural look this season. The ideal length for this look is hair that falls to the collar-bone or little shorter, and it has movement, body, and thickness, with a matte finish. Overall, this is a very cool-girl look, it should feel sexy and uncomplicated."

Roberto Cavalli Runway Hair by Guido for Redken

Milan Fashion Week Spring/ Summer 2013

Redken  Creative Consultant Guido let the clothes at the Spring 2013 Roberto Cavalli show take the front seat, creating a look that would best enhance the natural texture of each model's hair. The simple, slightly texturized style complemented a collection that showcased myriad fabrics, textures, bright colors, and wild animal prints in true Cavalli fashion.

"This look is really about how the girls look best themselves, how great they look walking down the runway with their natural hair, and really I'm just enhancing that. I'm also tucking the hair behind the ears at the end to give a slightly disheveled feel. But the clothes are very glamourous and they say it all- to create the right overall look for this show, we had to downplay the hair a little bit. This is an easy style that's a little bit grungy, and just very cool."
-Guido, Redken Creative Consultant

Balenciaga in Paris Fashion Week with Hair by Guido of Redken

Balenciaga Spring/ Summer 2013 Paris Fashion Week

Redken Creative Consultant Guido kicked off Spring 2013 Paris Fashion Week with the Balenciaga show, creating a flattering style that seemed simple, yet gave an immediate elegance to the look and added to the overall ethereal feel of the show. The look, created by pinning the two front sections back at the crown, perfectly complemented the gold headpieces each model wore, yet would also work just as well on it's own.

"The hair at Balenciaga is very natural, yet it's smooth, not frizzy. I didn't want to create big hair here today, but I still wanted it to feel very modern and rich. The style also fit with the metal hairpieces that Nicolas provided. They are really exquisite pieces, they were like twisted gold. We did a sort of rough, easy texture on the hair that offsets their beauty to a certain extent- they wouldn't go with super luxe hair."
-Guido, Redken Creative Consultant

1.) Apply outshine 01 anti-frizz polishing milk to damp hair and roughly blow dry to create a smooth but very natural looking finish.
2.) Create a messy center part and add powder refresh 01 aerosol hair powder/dry shampoo all over for increased "natural" texture and a little grip.
3.) Take two side sections from the very front, pull them back to just below the crown and secure with pins. Use two pins but secured but insert so that it looks like just one pin.
4.) Finish with pure force 16 non-aerosol fixing spray just on the style. (Guido then attached the metal headpieces which were provided by Balenciaga to complete the look).

Nina Ricci's Runway Hair by Guido

Paris Fashion Week Spring/ Summer 2013

Redken Creative Consultant Guido took inspiration from the Spring 2013 Nina RIcci show itself yesterday in Paris, creating an edgier hairstyle for a more provocative collection than seen from the house in recent years. The shiny French twist Guido styled was a departure from the more demure, ladylike styles with matte textures he usually creates for Nina Ricci. Yet the updo still retained that sense of classic feminine beauty and would be easy for a woman to recreate herself, just as the more eroticized collection still featured a number of it's signature cocktail dresses and wearable, everyday styles.

"I created a simple French twist today at Nina Ricci, it's a very feminine look and extremely easy to do. I also like that it's in fact very modern. I pulled out a few pieces towards the nape of the neck to give the style a little character, to ensure it wasn't completely perfect, she's still a real woman."
-Guido, Redken Creative Consultant

Christian Dior at Paris Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2013

Hair by Guido, Redken Creative Consultant

Redken Creative Consultant Guido created a style right in line with Raf Simon's refined, sophisticated and almost austere collection at the Christian Dior Spring 2013 show in Paris yesterday. Guido's sleek, precise pony was a wearable day-or-night look that made for a refreshing and clean overall look when paired with the elegant pantsuits, dresses, and neck scarves in the collection.

"We did a low, shiny ponytail at Dior today, and it's important to note that it really complements the very dramatic eye that Pat McGrath did. It's not frilly but it's very strong, very utilitarian. The simplicity of the ponytail gives this stripped-back feeling that I was going for."

Get Mindy Kaling's Red Hot, Red Carpet Look!

Celebrity stylist Luke Chamberlain and Matrix collaborated to create Mindy Kaling's showstopping hot look for this year's Primetime Emmys.

Inspiration: To compliment the 70’s, drapey feel of Mindy’s St. John gown, stylist Luke Chamberlain drew his inspiration from style icon Bianca Jagger. Staying away from anything too rough in texture, the key was to achieve a soft and romantic look through voluminous hair that would complement the romantic gown.

Step- By- Step:
1. Started with damp hair, applied Matrix Biolage Volumizing Mousse section by section throughout
2. Added a small amount of Biolage Exquisite Oil Replenishing Treatment, later blow dried the hair with a medium boar bristle round brush sealing in the oil and mousse achieving healthy body with tons of shine
3. Used a 1” barrel curling iron wrapping it in a figure eight pattern continuing this technique with all sections throughout the hair, later placing the curls in 1 inch velcro curlers while allowing to cool
4. Removed the rollers and brushed out the hair creating lush and voluminous waves
5. Finished off the look with Matrix Total Results Amplify Hairspray to lock in volume for the rest of the night

Red Carpet Hair Trends and Colors

We noticed lots of Emmy worthy hair trends and colors on the red carpet this year, and in an exclusive interview, L’Oréal Paris sat down with celebrity Hair Colorist, Jennifer J. to get the details on this year's hottest looks...

L’Oréal Paris: Did you color anyone’s hair for the Emmys?
Jennifer J: Yes, I colored January Jones’ blonde for the awards. The color is actually lighter at the bottom but she wore her hair up in a bun so it’s hard to see the subtle gradation.
L’Oréal Paris: What hair color and coordinating dress trends did you notice this season?
Jennifer J: It’s funny but a lot of the celebs with similar hair colors wore dresses in similar hues as well. The brunettes (such as Jena Malone, Kat Dennings and Ginnifer Goodwin) wore a lot of red dresses and/or red lips (in maroon, oxblood and true red shades) while many of the blondes wore pastels, taupes and grays (Heidi Klum, Sarah Hyland and Emily Van Camp).
L’Oréal Paris: Do consumers come in often asking for so-and-so’s red carpet cut, style or color? Anyone in particular that you hear requested again and again?
Jennifer J:Definitely. In LA, blondes often ask for January Jones’ hair color because it’s the perfect light blonde. Brunettes love Sofia Vergara’s rich, caramel brown and redheads ask for Christina Hendricks’ shade of red – it never looks faded.
L’Oréal Paris:What trends are currently hot for fall (among celebs and average consumers)?
Jennifer J:Brunettes are going for a richer, darker color that is either on the espresso or auburn side or a fresher ombré look which is much more toned down. Redheads are choosing mostly rich coppers, while blondes are showing more of their roots with one or two colors of highlights mixed in.
L’Oréal Paris:Is there a specific look/trend that you see frequently year after year on the red carpet?
Jennifer J.:Over the past few award seasons, I’ve been noticing very casual up do’s – either low or high buns with bangs or pieces loosely hanging down, which makes them feel more effortless and less “done.”
L’Oréal Paris:Do a lot of celebs turn to wigs and extensions/clip-on hair pieces?
Jennifer J:Yes, they pretty much use them all the time. However, this is the first time in a while where I’m seeing more natural hair, both in color and style, as the looks were much more relaxed. I could tell that a just few celebs used extensions to add some volume to their hair, but that was about it.
L’Oréal Paris:Were head bands and hair accessories popular on this year’s red carpet?
Jennifer J:Not this year – accessories were super minimal. There weren’t even as many earrings; it seemed like celebs focused on a statement ring or bracelet instead. I did notice that side parts were a big styling trend this season – accessory-free!

L’Oréal Paris:Are the crazier colors – like Kelly Osbourne’s lilac hue – getting more popular on the red carpet?
Jennifer J:Surprisingly, not really. But I think those fun shades are usually brought out for the VH1 or MTV awards. At this year’s Emmys, I noticed that brunettes were either going for a rich, all-over color (i.e. Kat Dennings, Zooey Deschanel) or a medium brown with caramel highlights (i.e. Sofia Vergara or Giuliana Rancic). Blondes were looking much more natural and many were highlighting their natural hair, instead of applying single process color first.

L’Oréal Paris:What do you think is the must have product to stash in your clutch for touch ups?
Jennifer J. I usually recommend including Elnett Satin Hairspray in Travel Size or a texture spray, like Wella’s Velvet Amplifier.

Red Carpet Looks, Styles and Trends!

I know we were all on red carpet style alert this past Sunday night for 2012's annual Primetime Emmy awards where celebs wowed us with everything from hot new colors, to hair trends and more!

The lovely Julianna Margulies stunned with her red carpet look created by make up artist Molly Stern.

Molly's inspiration came from Julianna’s Giambattista Valli couture gown which looked like an impressionist painting. For her look, Molly wanted to keep with that painterly theme and make her face look like it was done with watercolors vs. makeup.

Get the Look:

- First, Molly prepped Julianna's skin with By Terry Rose de Balm Serum to give her natural complexion dew and glow.
-Next, she sparingly applied L’Oréal Paris Visible Lift Repair Absolute Foundation only where she needed it.
-On her cheeks, Molly contoured using HOURGLASS Illume Sunset Cream Bronzer Duo and highlighted her bone structure with NARS Sex Appeal Blush.
-For her eyes she based the lid with L’Oréal Paris Infallible Never Fail Lacquer Liner 24H in Slate which she found to be the most perfect gray she ever used!
-Over top and up into the crease, she dusted a combination of L’Oréal Paris Infallible Eye Shadow in Sultry Smoke mixed with NARS Ecstasy Pressed Shadow.
-Under the eye Molly smudge the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Never Fail Lacquer Liner 24H in Slate and highlighted the under inner eye with a spot of gold using L’Oréal Paris Infallible Eye Shadow in Amber Rush.
-Lastly, she topped off her lashes with L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Power Volume 24H Mascara in Black.
-On her lips to keep with the wash of color, Molly pressed into her pout L’Oréal Paris Colour Caresse by Colour Riche Luminous Lipcolour in Merino Mauve to give them an earthy pinky/peach hue.

For Julianna's hair, stylist Adir Abergel found inspiration in the simple lines of the dress and wanted to mimic it with the hair. He went for a shiny, healthy texture that reflected light and had strong lines to it. A deep side part swept back into a classic chignon placed right in the middle of the head gave the illusion of a longer neck.

Get the Look:

-First, Adir started out by having the hair freshly washed with L’Oréal Paris EverCréme Intense Nourishing Shampoo and Conditioner. This is an important step to get as much shine and hydration to the hair.
-He applied L’Oréal Paris EverStyle Smooth & Shine Serum from roots to ends to seal the cuticle and to help get a smooth finish.
-He followed the arch of the eyebrow to place my deep side parting.
-He then took a round brush and blow dried the hair until it was completely dry.
-Once it was completely smooth and dry, Adir applied L’Oréal Paris EverStyle Smooth & Shine Crème to the ends and went over them with a flat iron to flatten the cuticle and create as much shine as possible.
-Before pulling the hair into a ponytail, placed right in the middle of the head, Adir applied some Frederic Fekkai Brilliant Glossing Cream. This helped tame any flyaways and created extra shine.
-To finish the look, he wrapped the ponytail around its base into a bun making sure it wasn't too tight, pinned it in place and had a few of the ends showing. This gave it a little softness I was looking for.
-For all night hold, he finished with L’Oréal Paris Elnett Satin Extra Strong Hold Hairspray.

Totally Fab, Inexpensive Emergency Buys.. Who Knew??

This is an impromptu post but is one that I really wanted to share.  On a whim, I stopped by my area's local Deal$ store to pick up a few emergency items.  I bought an .18oz bottle of Instant Nail Glue by California Nails for $1.00 and a package of Gillete's Simply Venus Triple Bladed disposable razors (a 4 pack) for $6.00.

Now, paying that low of a price for something can sometimes set a precedent for low expectations but in this instance I honestly could not have been more impressed.  I had never tried California Nails before and the brand was completely new to me.  I had applied just a small drop to my broken nail and it bonded and dried in less then a minute.  But this is not the news I felt obligated to share.  Most surprising was the fact it stayed bonded for a week! It's longevity was amazing and the only reason it broke again was due to my own clumsiness on the treadmill!  (At that point my nail was a total goner, glue or no glue).  I found it to be very reliable and would definitely purchase it again, as well as try more California Nails products.

Perhaps the best find was the Gillete razors!  I typically never use disposable ones but these ones were not only inexpensive, but had such cute packaging (I'm always a sucker for hot pink).  Each razor had 3 blades with a moisture strip along the top and ultimately gave me a really close shave without any nicks.  They had a hot pink, no slip grip handle with rotating head that easily followed the curvature of my legs.  I didn't have any red bumps after I was finished, and my legs felt smooth.  The astonishing part about the whole buy was that I managed to get an entire WEEK out of each razor.  The SAME amount of time that I get out of one Schick Quatro blade.  So for WAY less money, and equal (if not better results) it only took me about a hot second to decide I was going to switch from my usual razor and give myself the the Goddess treatment ;)

New York Fashion Week Spring/ Summer 2013

Diego Binetti Stuns with Underwater Grace at NYFW

If fashion designer Diego Binetti is not already on your radar he should be.  His Spring/ Summer collection at this season's Fashion Week took its audience on a mystical journey through the underwater world with romantic, hand painted chiffon garments that gracefully floated down the runway.  Deriving inspiration from fairytale mermaids and Yemaya the African- Brazilian goddess of the sea, Binetti merged undeniable beauty with his acute sense of style and brought to life an unforgettable memoir of his travels to the runway.

Makeup artist Sebastien Tardif for Veil Cosmetics created a water color drenched look for the catwalk. Evening skin tone, he created a moist, dewy glow throughout the face using a liquid powder as the base.

Soft lavenders and gentle pinks were splashed over lids and drawn out towards the hair line to create a captivating focus on the eyes, topping them off with hints of gold on the inner corners.  Using concealer and a warm shade of coral, Tardif finished with a muted lip.  The superstar product used to help create the look was Veil's Illuminating Complexion Fix for Face and Eyes.  Its formula is light, hypoallergenic, non irritating and made with both soothing and brightening properties.  The most enchanting aspect of the look was it wear ability.  Describing the look as "youthful" Tardif refrained from using any liner or false lashes.  Instead the look enhanced natural beauty and created a fresh, modern look for the everyday girl to wear.

To complete the overall look Binetti paired with CND Hands, Feet, Beauty and began working with various foundations and stacking concepts.  Using CND's signature clear tip as his base, Binetti designed a 3 tiered, multi dimensional nail.  Binetti used natural pearls as inserts between layers of complimentary shades stacked a top one another, giving it a 3-D effect.  Each nail had a clear base, a layer of CND's Tropics Coral and Black Jack, and 2 pearls.  The stunning originality of the nails added depth and fantasy to the collection.  In an effort to take "the runway look into commercial" as Binetti said, CND modified wearable versions of the nail using similar color schemes.  They are exquisite variations and are the perfect eye catching details to complete any look.

New York Fashion Week Spring/ Summer 2013

Glamour, Elegance.. the sheer beauty that is Jill Stuart

Fresh, glowing faces lite up the runway at this season’s Jill Stuart show.  The stunning execution of faded Hollywood Glam by makeup artist Diane Kendal was elegant, understated and glamorous all at the same time.  Created with various Jill Stuart cosmetics, Kendal made the eyes soft and romantic by smoking them out with reddish- brown Kryolan grease paint on the lids, and lining them with Jill Stuart Cosmetics Deep Brown Eye Pencil.  Kendal used Anastasia Brow Powder Duo to fill in the brows and bring intensity to the face.  To get that dewy glow she swept MAC Cremeblend Blush in Ladyblush over the cheeks and finished with Korres Cheek Butter in Chara Crimson to leave a bold red stain in the center of the lips. The divine part of this look was its vulnerability.  It had an ease about it that was simple and effortless, yet drew unmistakable attention like the timeless starlets from years ago.

Stylist Odile Gilbert for Kerastase Paris created straight, sleek locks that mirrored the look with a sophisticated femininity.  Sections of hair were flawlessly pulled back behind the ears and tucked under, leaving the rest of the hair cascading down like a veil.  To get the look, Gilbert blew hair straight with Mousse Volumactive to give a flexible hold, than sprayed sections with both Double Force and Double Force Contole Ultime for added texture.  Perhaps the secret to the success was the new Elixir Ultime Moringa Immortel.  Made with elements of the Moringa Tea, it is designed to protect hair from the worst of any damaging condition.  If it is a key tool at NYFW it undoubtedly proves an effective tool for every girl.

New York Fashion Week Spring/ Summer 2013

Honor Glows with Natural Elegance

The New York Fashion Week Spring/ Summer 2013 season is officially underway. A close up look backstage at the hair, makeup, and nail prep for Honor’s latest collection revealed an inspirational ode to anatomy and nature.   The look was a compilation of skincare and cosmetics to create a healthy, soft appearance suitable for any girl.

Makeup artist Romy Soleimani described the overall look as luminous, lucid, and natural.  A combination of Erno Laszlo skincare products provided a hydrated base and Stila cosmetics added a dewy glow that was simply stunning.  Artists began with Erno Laszlo’s Ebalm Cleanser and applied Hydra Therapy Skin Revitalizer serum for that instant boost. Starting with simple skin care and prepping with minimal coverage was key, using spot treatment only where needed.

Soleimani applied Stila’s Stay All Day Foundation and Concealer and Sheer Pressed Powder to all over the face, sweeping on Custom Color Blush and Self Adjusting Bronze over the cheeks.  The skin had a fresh, natural glow, allowing for a focus on the eyes.  Applying Glamour Eyes Mascara created spine like spiky lashes that stood out against the bone inspired white lids.  The moist, transparent effect for the eyes was created with Opal Jewel Eye Shadow swept over the lid, followed by gloss over top.

(The lovely Deborah Lippmann sharing the insight behind her look)
Ensuring every detail down to the finger exuded perfection was Deborah Lippmann’s exquisite combination of opaque white Amazing Grace and sheer white Like a Virgin. “It’s the bone inside the body” says Lippmann with an emphasis on a “Really strong white” nail on both the fingers and toes. A short, cropped look with 2 coats of Amazing Grace, followed by a coat of Like a Virgin and a glossy finish with her Addicted to Speed top coat . “So many layers keep it from looking choppy like white out” she explains.

Hair by Bumble and Bumble was an intricate design and pattern resembling those of bones and muscles. Done with a center part and then 2 introverted French braids on each side were then secured underneath. Executed in a not too perfect fashion, it had a delicate and believable appearance.

Honor elegantly portrayed the simplicity of nature and the root of human beauty.  The ability to embrace our natural features can allow us to enhance our own beauty and build the confidence to stand out in a crowd.  I love this overall look and love it even more that any girl can wear it.
